It’s been a good 57 years since our little island became independent. In less than six decades, this nation has accomplished a level of affluence on par with many of the world’s most developed nations….

August is a month where we celebrate our nation’s independence and all things Singaporean. What better way to celebrate it than to tip our hats to the vibrant restaurant scene that we’ve so painstakingly built over the decades?…

Whether you have friends visiting or you are in fact, a visitor yourself, one thing you absolutely must do in Singapore is to try some of its iconic hawker favourites. There’s a great diversity of it here, and far from being tourist food, these are the dishes Singaporeans of every stripe eat on a regular basis….

And just like that, it’s July. We’ve crossed the halfway mark past 2022 and it would seem like the worst of the pandemic is over (we hope we’re not jinxing it). Because a glance at this month’s list of new restaurants is a blazingly fiery one. While Japanese restaurants dominated our list months past, July sees a brand new slate of pedigree names either restarting well-loved shuttered restaurants, finally opening a Singapore offshoot or venturing out on their own….

We’re all for dining out but when you’ve got fitness goals to hit, there needs to be a time when we put down that morsel of foie gras on your fork in favour of a piece of lettuce. That said, eating healthy does not have to be depressing, nor even difficult. In recent years, there’s a been an explosion of meal subscription services that lets you eat healthy without having to resort to boiled chicken breast and broccoli….

Here’s a little fact that may surprise many: alcohol doesn’t necessarily make you gain weight. In fact, clear, heavy spirits like gin and vodka are actually pretty low in calories and will not add too much to your daily calorie count. So why does alcohol have a bad rep when it comes to healthy eating? We think it’s because it’s almost always imbibed with food and drink that isn’t great for the body. The low calorie count for spirits for instance is shaken up into a cocktail that, while delicious, also includes plenty of sugar….

Hear us out: The easiest meals to go healthy for are the ones you have in the office, especially if you work in the Central Business District (CBD). It’s fast, it’s nearby, and you get all the macros you need to meet your fitness goals. What’s more, lunch is always a social activity so you can get your colleagues into the act. After all, what is a fitness without the support of those around you?…

There was once a time when restaurants didn’t think twice about sustainability. Serving up good food meant cutting out the best part of a certain ingredient and tossing out the rest. All that has changed. A new breed of chefs who are concerned about the environment as much as animal welfare have emerged in the last few years – all while still making sure that what’s being put in front of you is still delicious….

What’s the point of living on an island if you don’t indulge in some waterfront dining now and then? Despite our relatively proximity to beaches all over the city, these restaurants are not as common as they should be – a real pity since some time under the sun with views of the sea is really what the human soul needs. Sun’s up, guns out and get your forks and knives at the ready….

We admit, it’s easy to forget that we live on a tropical island. We spend our days in air conditioned comfort and the sight of the CBD skyscrapers are far more common than is the sight of coconut trees. Yet a beach getaway is just minutes away if you choose to take one. Indeed, there simply isn’t a lack of beach bars and clubs in Singapore, some of which have even won global awards. If you’re a tourist on our island city, welcome and we hope these bars will satiate your appetite for the sun, the sea and the shore….

Private dining – the concept where guests go to a person’s house to savour a feast – has been around for some time now. While it started off as a rustic affair led by home-based cooks serving up Peranakan food, it is now seeing a complete overhaul as a new generation of cooks, and sometimes chefs have emerged putting up food that could give restaurants a run for the money. Gone are the days when private dining meant having to eat subpar Peranakan food. These days, even chefs who are trained at some of Singapore’s best restaurants are getting into the act. The result is a truly refined experience that could rival an actual proper restaurant….

The June holidays are here, and so is freedom. By that, we mean the near-complete end of Covid-19 restrictions – except of course, wearing masks indoors. It’s a great month to gather all your loved ones in one place as the F&B industry has roared back to life. The music is back, the crowds are back and so is our optimism. This month sees a smorgasbord of new restaurants that span the culinary cannon. We have a private dining chef that has left the confines of his home where he first started out to collaborate with an Italian restaurant group while Lo & Behold Group’s only Malay restaurant The Coconut Club has a new flagship….

There are several things we take for granted here in Singapore: clean streets, efficiency, safety and… the availability of fresh seafood year round. It’s easy to forget that living on a tropical island means we will have access to some of the best regional catches money can buy. Compound that with the fact that Singapore is an extremely connected, high networth city and you’ll get some truly premium produce landing on our plates….

When one thinks of Orchard Road, the last thing that comes to mind is a gastronomic experience. Yes perhaps there are better places elsewhere but that doesn’t mean that Singapore’s shopping belt is culinarily barren. If you know where to look, there are honest eateries and restaurants run by eager restaurateurs – not the cookie cutter soulless establishments that serve food cooked in central kitchens….

Wine bars in Singapore are seeing a renaissance. In the past year, everyone from Michelin-starred chefs, new entrepreneurs and established F&B groups seem to be opening these joints. One could argue that you could get meat anywhere in Singapore. Indeed, you could walk into any supermarket and walk out with several kilos. But what if you need to cook something a little more special? What cuts would you need if you were to say, cook a beef bourguignon for a dinner party? And what if you need to know exactly how long to cook a steak to medium rare for?…

Every relationship has a start. For some of us who are lucky, that would be the start of two lives spent together. But getting there isn’t always easy. At the beginning, savvy daters would need to walk the fine line between showing interest and not coming across too strong and risk scaring a potential partner away….

They say that the days are long yet the years are so short. That rings true as the first two months of 2022 are well and gone and soon, so will the first quarter. But a new month brings new opportunities, and with it, new restaurants to discover. This March sees a diverse slate of openings, from a famed American pizzeria to a space that bills itself Asia’s first vegan butcher. If that doesn’t raise your eyebrows, we frankly don’t know what will. Here’s more….

It’s hard to resist the arresting sensation of melt-in-your mouth Japanese wagyu. These premium cuts of beef are a culinary luxury and gets its delicious flavour from a relatively high fat content. To the uninitiated, all uni, or sea urchin in Japanese, look the same. In fact, there are over 950 types of sea urchin, and only a handful are worth eating. After all, those who visit top end sushi-yas in Singapore will see that it comes either neatly arranged in wooden frames or more rarely, inside the sea urchin shells itself. Some might mistake the apricot-hued flesh as the roe, when in fact, it is the gonads of the sea creatures that are eaten. These premium delicacies often taste best at the height of their feeding season where they eat seaweed, algae, kelp and sometimes small mussels. These are then converted into energy stores in the gonads for them to spawn….

If there’s one thing the pandemic has taught us it’s this: We took travel for granted. Yes it will be a while until large scale leisure travel resumes, at least in Asia, but for now at least, the battered industry is seeing some life thanks to the Vaccinated Travel Lanes (VTL). Amongst the cities that we have these arrangements with, Seoul’s was greeted with the most cheer. The city offers the four seasons that we crave for, the exciting pulse of the the Hallyu wave and best of all, great restaurants and eateries that let you truly appreciate korean cuisine with all of its intricacies….

As any chef or even home cook can tell you, no two butter brands are created the same — nevermind that it’s often made with just two ingredients: cream and salt. When it comes to French butter, that’s even more pronounced. For starters, the French take their butter so seriously that all its makers — whether large companies or small artisanal makers — are legally bound to produce butter that’s at least 82 percent fat. It also has to be cultured, which means that live cultures are introduced to the cream before the maker starts churning….

It’s been a tough year for the restaurant scene in Singapore but if there’s one trait it has it’s this: resilience. It’s the year-end festivities and that means one thing: your wallet is getting thinner every single time you head out. Between the mad rush to buy gifts and catching up with all your loved ones, the costs can add up. Thankfully, it’s entirely possible to make merry during the yuletide season without having to break the bank. We don’t mean heading to the hawker centre here (though supporting our hawkers is always awesome), but proper sit-down restaurants where you can have a meal and a glass of wine or two….

But the choice of restaurants in Singapore to have your Christmas meal is massive, so where does one start?…
